The original AVPN investment showcase is back on our website with many new cases profiled by our members!

The purpose of the investment showcase is to provide a platform for AVPN members to showcase their investees and to encourage the deal sharing, co-investment and partnership among our members. All projects posted are supported by our members. Since the relaunch of the investment showcase session, it has garnered thousands of page views. 78 investees from start-up to scale up are currently displayed, covering sectors from education to aging, from poverty alleviation to clean technology.

For example, Little Dolphin CP Therapy Centres, supported by our member Yi Rui Foundation provide medical therapy to children with cerebral palsy (CP). Presently, China has more than six million patients with cerebral palsy, of which children under 12 years old make up more than two million. 74.62% of these children are born in economically poor regions of China where proper pre-natal care is lacking. Based on Yi Rui Foundation’s research, more than 65% of these children with CP do not receive regular treatment partly due to the lack of effective ways to improve the condition as well as the heavy cost involved in long-term medical care for the condition.

Yi Rui Foundation currently runs 14 charitable Little Dolphin CP Therapy Centres across China serving over 700 of the most underprivileged CP children as well as CP orphans abandoned at birth. The centres also give priority employment to family members of CP children in treatment to help the family better cope with financial and emotional burdens of caring for their CP child over the long term.

Combating poverty in Vietnam, Oxfam is developing the Enterprising for Development Project to support entrepreneurs who committed to achieve social impact while making financial returns in Asia. The project aims to cover the full spectrum of the so called ‘missing middle’ by dividing the SMEs in this spectrum in three categories (small, early growth and expansion) who are all serviced with finance and business development services (BDS) tailored to their specific needs.
During the period 2014-2015, 10 SMEs have received business training courses from the Project and 7 SMEs are getting private coaching to improve their business plan, human resources management system and financial management system. 95 management and staff of these SMEs have received trainings on business skill and social impact management. These SMEs are generating benefits for more than 3000 small scale farmers, of which more than 50% are women.

Why are we highlighting these organisations?
In our recent survey, we can see a strong interest from our members (81%) to invest in organisations equipped with business models. Among AVPN members, 49% are currently investing in social enterprise/business and 32% are supporting charity/non-profit with earned income.

For our members who are investing in social enterprise/business, there is a roughly equal split of interest in pilot/start-up stage (29%) and in established/scaling-up stage (37%). Scant resource is available to support early stage social enterprises from ideation to pilot.
